I think the that the saddest thing in the world is lost potential. One of my professors, Dr. Richards, once chastized me about my lack of academic performance in one of his classes. He compared me to Samson, saying that Samson, though he had a ton of potential for God’s kingdom, failed miserably and all his potential influence died right with him. His situation bring to mind the “Parable of the Talents”, the main lesson of which is that God desires that we use the gifts he has given us to produce fruit for his kingdom, and furthermore that the improper usage of these gifts will result in his disappointment and possible wrath.
God has entrusted valuable things to people, especially his people. Because with his people, not only has he entrusted special talents, abilities, and passions, but also the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Spirit which it begats. That is our most prized posession. So let us not imitate the one who returned the talent which he was given with nothing in accompaniment. But instead, let us return to the Lord fruit of out the talents which he has entrusted to us.
